Cable overheating

Help, I've got a problem I've never experienced before.

Because I am self isolating the battery in my 2004 Zafira A went flat. I charged the battery and when I put it back in the car and connected the positive cable the cooling fan started up and there was smoke coming from the engine compartment. The cable was red hot after about five seconds.

Anybody got any ideas as to what is causing it?

Okay....do not connect it back up as this could start a fire.

Have the car checked by a garage as a matter of urgency as this is not right
