Astra J , first long drive.
Thank you for your kind comment, my wife and I were very taken by its look and also the cabin and seats are well fitted and comfy. The dealer tells us it has a factory "XP" kit fitted which I must say gives it a modern and purpose full look , though my Son says the brake discs look tiny thru the big wheels !

Hi...and welcome to the Club Interesting to read your history with Vauxhalls, from the era when they were great cars to work on. Droopsnoot Firenza, always wanted one and now wouldn't be able to afford one....good luck with your search for a classic Vauxhall. Feel free to jump into any post you feel you can answer or add your opinion, wisdom, etc. Great to have you onboard !

UK owners: sharing experiences of wet timing belt engine fai
Hi all, I’m an individual vehicle owner who’s experienced a wet timing belt–related engine failure and I’m trying to raise awareness and understand how common this issue is across the UK. Independent garages are increasingly talking about wet timing belt degradation (e.g. PureTech, EcoBoost), where belt material breaks down inside the engine oil, blocks the oil pickup, and leads to oil starvation and sudden engine damage — sometimes at relatively low mileage and with little warning. Rather than treating cases in isolation, I’ve put together a voluntary owner reporting page where people can share their experience if they choose. This isn’t commercial research, a survey, or data collection for profit — it’s about consumer awareness, supporting complaints, and helping owners understand whether what they’re experiencing is common. The page also includes guidance on: • what evidence helps if a claim is rejected • who to report issues to • and how others have navigated warranty/manufacturer responses If you’ve experienced something similar and want to share, details are here: 👉 https://sites.google.com/view/wet-belt-failures/home No obligation at all — even comments describing your experience are helpful for discussion. I’m also interested in hearing from mechanics or trade professionals who are seeing this more often.

Wow! I'm totally jealous - superb cars from an era when cars were interesting and were a passion unlike todays' vehicles. Welcome to the club !

ODB error keeps returning
I would say that a throttle body clean up is next on the list - if all wiring and connections are okay then this should be the next thing to do. There are plenty of videos and tutorials on cleaning and resetting the throttle body on the net and also gives you the opportunity to check hoses, etc for splits, perishing, leaks, etc while you're down at the back of the engine. Let us know how you get on with it

Bi-xenon Headlight error
Hi, I have a 2014 Insignia 2.0 CDTI ELITE, it has the Bi-xenon lights, I’m having the dreaded condensation problem getting inside the headlight, however recently the near side headlight has started making a grinding or clicking noise. After several seconds of it doing this - it points itself left into the hedge. In response I lose full beam controls and the error codes “Headlight levelling malfunction” and “Advanced front lighting”. Does anyone know if there is anyone trustworthy on repairing these, as I have seen a few listing on ebay with each account almost slagging the other off. A new headlight, if can find the correct one is well over £800+.

Sat Nav
Not entirely sure if it is a direct fit. It may be better to get a TomTom or similar as they update regularly using WiFi so its always current information and can transfer to other cars as well

Engine temperature for cooling fan to come on?
If it is running fine and no drop in the coolant level then it should be okay - obviously when the weather starts to get warm then it is worth checking the fan to ensure its working okay

Ac pulley wheel
No, that is as it should be - the only time the pulley 'locks up' is when the pump is energise and locks into place when you switch the air con on. You will know if it is working as the engine revs will drop and the engine will sound laboured and also an audible click/clunk noise will be heard
-
Auxiliary belt
My first thoughts were the belt tensioner being worn but you can see if this is happening because it will 'walk' towards the edge of the pulleys as soon as you run it up. Also look for any signs of a specific area that it is walking off - could be main crank pulley, Air Con, water pump, alternator, etc. This should give an indication of where the misalignment is present - sometimes known it to be some grit up behind the mounting bracket causing it to be misaligned.

Pure tech engine warranty
I know of oil additives that will clean the carbon from the piston rings and this can restore compression and cylinder sealing but it is just something you add to the oil and run for a while and then empty out and refill with fresh oil - but this is a £25 bottle of snake oil - which may or may not resolve your issue. Look up Forte treatments and you can see specs and benefits of their products
