    Yes the starter inhibitor switch, which, IIRC, is on the top of the box, would be a good place to commence, but I guess as the OP is now 6 months old, things have moved on.

    Greetings from Bristol! A Saab man for many years, and of course the modern ones have major GM influences, including the 9-3SS Aero in our fleet, but I digress. Owned two Mk2 Cavaliers in my youth - a 1.6GL, and soon after, when the opportunity came up, top of the range 1.8 CDi. Both were excellent for what they were, and I remember them fondly.. Good luck with the new forum.
