Hi does anybody know if it is possible to connect my iphone or ipod to the speakers in my 2008 'H' 1.8 Astra?

There is a 'jack-point' on the center console but nothing happens when I plug in the iphone.

I live in rural France and the car radio reception is useless outside the cities - can anyone help?
